How Can I Get A Higher Rank On The Search Engine Result Pages?

Getting a higher rank in the search engine result pages is indispensable for every business across the globe. The task seems much complicated seeing the immense competition, but execution can be made simpler by working on the basics. Let us first understand how the search engines work in order to determine what one needs to do to synchronize the website in line to the search engine rules. Understanding the search engine algorithm will give us an idea behind how the search engine ranks a particular website.

Search Engines in layman's terms are like puzzle solvers! Some of the most genius minds on this planet have tried to work out algorithms to analyze the query put froth by users and provide the best suited answer the query. Therefore the search terms that we enter into the search engine are basically questions which the search engine finds answers to. It is fascinating to learn how this extremely complex software has made our lives so simple in the world today. Every search engine maintains a huge database of web pages with the help of an automated software called search bots or crawlers. These crawlers scan websites on the internet and send the information retrieved to the search engine data center where in layman's terms the website is saved! Whenever a particular user enters a search phrase (also called a key phrase), for example web development company India, the search engine processes that query with its database of pages and finds the most relevant page containing those key phrases.

Doesn't it look a little too simple?

Tip to Note: Google has 5 data centers across the world and is said to have indexed more than 8 billion pages! Yet it delivers the results to any user query within a fraction of a second.

Let us consider the search engine perspective as well and give them some commendation! The search engines not only have to find the answers to the queries, but also have to find out the most relevant ones from the huge list of similar looking pages. Therefore the automated software not only have to analyze the webpages but also have to rank them in a way so as to place the best find on top of others. The task looks simple there is an extremely complex algorithm that works behind to rank web pages.

Often one would have noticed that any organic search engine optimization process takes from 12 - 16 weeks to show results. Now this is the base time that any search engine has kept for itself to analyze and scan the website as per its guidelines. You may be wondering that does it take that long to scan the website?? The answer is no! But search engines analyze a website continuously over this period to determine its position on the SERP's (search engine result pages). A search engine like Google can take up to 6 months to give your website a page rank, and about 4 months to decide your website's position on the search engine result pages.

Let us focus on Google users:

There may be some users who would say that: we have got a page rank within a month of uploading a brand new website! Or we have got no page rank but have got a first page position on the SERP's!

The occurrence of such cases is rare but in past many have experienced such instances. This was called a "Google sandbox effect"! This generally occurs to a relatively new domain and is a Google exercise to determine whether or not one has used any negative technique for optimization (black hat techniques). Also some users wish to achieve immediate success after the launch of their website. In such impatience, they try to get in as many back links, content etc for their website to get a jump start. However they forget that Google would analyze them over a period of 12 - 16 weeks minimum and then give them a permanent rank! (of course those already existing as leaders deserve some fair ranking!!) Therefore Google puts these websites under a scanner (scrutiny) in order to make sure that no illegal methods of getting a higher ranks are used. This scrutiny region is called a sandbox. Now one would ask why have I got an immediate rank? For this one has to understand that this is not a permanent rank, but is basically an illusion one has created for the search engine algorithm which is bound to give you a rank for the work done by you. However, the algorithm is designed in a way that if it is forced to give you a rank so soon, it would put you under a scanner! (It is like saying that if you earn a lot of money very fast, the income tax department has got an eye for you!) The details of the sand box effect would be discussed in later articles, however what is important to note is that one must not try to get a rank overnight!

Coming back to the key question- how can I get a higher rank on the search engines?

The first step of course is the set froth directions for the search engine algorithm. If the directions are there, then the search engines would have no problems in co-relating your webpage to the search query entered by any user on the globe. Let us have a look at some of these directions:

1. Keywords in Meta Tags, Title Tags, Anchor text, Alt Texts: These are some of the areas where any webmaster can set directions for the search engines to follow. Here one can put in some keywords he/she wants to get the website optimized for. But do remember not to over exaggerate on the keywords or you are bound to be penalized.

2. Keyword Rich Content in the text: Writing a content based on the inverted triangle rule is very important if you have to optimize your website for these search engines. The search engine crawlers scan websites from top to bottom and from left to right, therefore one has to design the content in such a way so as to make an inverted triangle of the keywords in the text.

3. Well structured website: Internal linking of the website is indispensable for complete indexing of the website. It is like setting up road paths for the smooth indexing by the crawler.

4. Say no to spam: Spamming of text, links etc can kill your rankings, so beware of not to copy.

5. arrange for links from external websites, web-directories, social bookmarking websites etc. These links should have keyword rich anchor texts in them and should be form credible websites (i.e. non spammed websites). However do not try to get in all the links at once. Best is a slow & continuous approach which leaves search engine software under no suspicion.

Search Engine Optimization is a very useful method to gain popularity or increase business, however it is essential to take in some expert help to avoid any kind of penalization to your virtual office online by the search engines.

Web Directories - Performance, Purpose, Problems - A General Guide to Web Directories

The path to building a successful web directory is far from a simple task. It requires a certain amount of devotion to take a web directory script and transform it into a heavily used directory. Web directories contain more complexities than meets the eye, and I have learned first hand that the development of a quality web directory is no walk in the park. But a good web directory is worth its weight in gold, for both webmasters & internet surfers alike. Let us enter the world of web directories.

A web directory acts much like a search engine, but on a much smaller scale. Web directories are essentially a categorized index of websites that have been submitted by website owners. Directories normally have search features, allowing users to search through the entire index, just like a search engine. The main differences between a directory and a search engine is that very few directories contain the amount of links that a search engine does. Search engines also collect data from websites, which is used to categorize and rank them. Directories lack the ability to "crawl", or exam websites as search engines due, therefore the only information a directory contains on a particular website is the information that was submitted by the website owner. Most directories use meta tags and keywords to search for websites, where as search engines use complex algorithms that take into consideration much more than meta tags (the value of meta tags in search engines has actually declined). Web directories are not the most popular internet search tools because huge search engines like Google and Yahoo are much more convenient to use and contain a vast amount of resources available to be searched. The largest and most popular web directory is the Open Directory Project (DMOZ), whose links are indexed by Google, Yahoo, and the majority of other search engines. Google and Yahoo both have their own web directories as well. Though independently owned web directories may not be so popular for internet searchers, they do have their benefits for webmasters & surfers alike.

Web directories can have several purposes, it all depends on what the administration's intended goals are. Some web directories are purely advertising hot spots, while others focus on driving targeted traffic to the directory. Some directories are free, some paid, others both. Directories can have broad topics, or specific topics. Lets start with the different types of web directories.

First, we have what is commonly referred to as a "niche" directory. Niche directories have a specific topic, or niche, and the links found within the directory reflect that. Examples of a niche would be automotive directories, sports directories, shopping directories, web promotion directories, etc. Niche directories are most beneficial to internet *searchers; they have a specific topic and therefore *surfers and *searchers have a better chance of finding what they want. In a human edited niche directory, you are very unlikely to find spam sites as well.

We will label the next kind of web directory as a "Free for All" directory. Free for all directories have no specific topic. They are very broad in their category selection and links are usually hidden behind several sub-categories. Free for all websites can benefit webmasters so long as the "no follow" tag is not applied (page rank increase), however it is in your best interest to avoid free for all directories for several reasons. Using a free for all directory to search for a website is more likely than not going to require you to sort through heaps of spam. A lot of free for all directories are not human edited due to the massive amount of link requests they receive, and websites are not carefully examined before being approved into the directory. The link quality of some free for all directories is extremely poor. Also, a lot of free for all directories extract data from other directories; how original. No sense in supporting the lack of creativity or devotion in such web directories. Despite a flood of low quality free for all directories, there are some very good ones available. A well organized, human edited (human edited = higher quality links) free for all directory is a great place to search for websites. It also serves webmasters with increased website exposure and if they are lucky, the directory is indexed by Google and other search engines, therefore improving its ranking on search engine result pages.

The final type of web directories that will be examined are the poorest quality ones. Often referred to as "link farms" these directories are not human edited, due to contain high quality links, lack organization and unique features, and more often than not they become blacklisted from the major search engines. Searching these type of web directories is useless, and it's highly recommended that you do not support such sites. Furthermore, if you are a webmaster, submitting your website to link farms will substantially decrease your popularity amongst search engines. These directories due more harm then good, and consequently give other directories a bad name.

Whether you are submitting a website or searching for one, you will achieve the best results with a high quality niche directory. Webmasters, here are the common submission options for most web directories: Free submission: Submit your website to the directory for free. Simply fill out the form and wait for approval. A "no follow" tag is often placed on free submissions. Regular Submission: A small fee is usually necessary for regular submissions. Regular submissions can sometimes use the "no follow" tag. The main benefit is that submission approval times are significantly faster for regular submissions. Reciprocal Submissions: Free submissions that require a reciprocal link of the web directory to be placed onto the website you are submitting. Reciprocal submissions sometimes use "no follow' tags, but often do not. Cost is free with reciprocal submissions. Featured Submissions: Paid submissions that grant you premium listing (websites listed in special section of category, generally above regular links), fast submission approval, and paid submissions do not place "no follow" tags on your links, meaning you gain a back link for search engine ranking benefits. Featured and regular submission fees are generally charged per year, and prices vary depending on the directory and the traffic it receives.

Web directories have benefits for both webmasters and internet users. For webmasters, web directories main benefit is website exposure. Webmasters submit their websites to directories to increase their exposure. Not only can they receive traffic from people using the directory, but they can also benefit from a back link; a link to their website indexed by Google. Google ranks pages in several ways, but back links is one of the most important. A quality back link to your website increases your Google page rank. Enough quality directory back links, and your on your way to the top spot in Google search results. Bottom line: Web directories can increase your websites exposure by sending targeted traffic your way. For people using web directories as a search tool, web directories can offer you a big advantage over search engines. Search engine indexing is a big contest between website owners and therefore a lot of high quality content gets left out of the search engine result pages. Top results often go to corporations, big business, or highly devoted marketers. What about the little enthusiast and personal websites that contain valuable knowledge otherwise unavailable on the web?

Well, a lot of these quality content websites can be found in web directories. If you are having trouble finding what your looking for in search engines, try searching for a niche directory and I bet you will find what your looking for. Furthermore, using web directories supports smaller businesses and helps the little guy out. Not everyone has the time or money to spend on internet marketing or website promotion, and web directories are a great way for these small websites to gain some exposure. Big search engines have monopolized the internet search market, and it makes the relationship between big search engines and website owners way to critical. Google doesn't like you, and your sales drop 75 %. Now that does not seem right, does it? If more people frequented web directories, directory owners would gain a larger slice of the search engine market.

There is a large number of web directories on the internet today that have been blacklisted by Google. It is best to avoid these directories at all costs; having your link listed there will most likely negatively affect your search engine rankings. But how do you know which directories to submit your URL to and which ones to avoid? These guidelines in rating web directories may help:

1. Organization

- Web Directories should be well organized and categorized.

- Categories should be, neither, too broad nor too narrow. Category organization is important, but a directories search feature holds more value for finding links.

- Links should be easily accessible.

- Links should be posted into the correct category. If they are not, this is a sign of automated link approval, which should never be used in a directory. (Even the largest, most powerful of web directories are human edited).

- Poor quality and spam links should not be accepted into any decent web directory.

2. Advertisements

- A quality directory should contain a free submission option, so it is necessary for directories to offer sponsored listings and sale advertisement space. However, the page should not be cluttered with ads. This is a sign that the directory administration is too focused on making a quick buck than enhancing the internet experience.

- If the directory has a specific topic, or niche, than the advertisements should pertain to that topic. Off topic and irrelevant ads do not belong on niche directories.

3. Page Rank (PR)

- Rumor has it that it's possible to fake some page rank indicators. Make sure your page rank comes from a reliable source when examining the PR of a web directory.

- Page rank is important factor in website popularity. However, directories that boast high page ranks, or have their page rank in the directory name or slogan typically use the page rank factor to compensate for their downfalls. It's like bragging...and you want a modest web directory. Find a directory that shares and uses their page rank to the benefit of directory users, not a directory that clearly lacks in features but boasts a high PR.

- Directories that display website links within a category in descending order of PR are less desirable than those that display links based on popularity (unique hits). Most desirable first, not highest PR; very beneficial to new websites attempting to build initial PR.

4. No Follow Tag

- A web directory that uses "no follow" tags on all links is useless.

- "no follow" tags are acceptable on free submissions. Reciprocal & featured submissions should not be tagged as "no follow" links. This gives value and meaning to featured (sponsored) & reciprocal links, while controlling the amount of links indexed by search engines to a reasonable number.

- In a quality directory, do not fear a "no follow" on your free submission. A good directory brings in targeted traffic, and though you may be missing out on that back link, there is still a lot of potential for increasing traffic.

5. Reviews, Marketing, & Promotion

- Search around for reviews and recommendations on web directories. There are some really good resources when it comes to choosing quality directories.

- A web directory should be marketed to both webmasters & internet surfers. If a directory only attracts webmasters, what kind of web traffic is it likely to bring? Look into how the web directory is promoted and marketed.
These 5 guidelines can help you distinguish between low quality link farms and high quality, effective web directories. I hope this information helps you in your website's marketing and promotion campaign, in terms of website directory submission.

SEO Basics: Learn How to Increase Your Google Page Rank

The Page Rank system at Google is the top search engine's way of determining the value of your website. For example, you will get a higher Page Rank value if you have a large amount of high-quality backlinks in place. Here is a list of 5 different things you can do to increase your Google Page Rank:

Step One - Add Your Site to Google

The best way to get a good ranking at Google is to submit your site to be considered for indexing at the Google.com website.

Step Two - Add Your Site to Directories

There are a number of popular link directories that will provide you with some very relevant, high-quality backlinks that will be used to determine your site's value and Page Rank. You should submit your site to at least 10 different link directories. It should be noted that most link directory listings are checked and added by hand, meaning that it could take months before your site gets listed unless you are willing to pay a fee for more immediate results.

Step Three - Article Marketing

If you are looking to get high-quality backlinks to your site you should consider article marketing. Just by writing a couple of relevant, keyword-rich articles each day and then submitting them to multiple article directories with your website link in the author's signature line will get you some pretty solid traffic.

Create writer's accounts with 5 of the top article directories and then submit at least one article to each site on a daily basis. Once you get going, you'll be amazed at how quickly your backlinks grow. Create articles that are around 500 words long - you don't want it too short, but then again you don't want it so long that people won't bother to read it. Make your articles easy to read and follow by using short paragraphs, bullet lists for quick tips and advice - all of these little extras will make your article stand out and be read.

Step Four - Try Blogging

Another great way to create high-quality backlinks to your site is to build and write your own relevant, keyword-rich blog. Blogs will only work to increase your traffic, however, if you make fresh posts on a daily basis and update the content on the blog regularly.

Step Five - Forum Marketing

Forum marketing helps to put you in direct contact with potential customers, discussing relevant topics and posting your opinions on something related to your products. Join a minimum of 5 forums that focus on a specific niche relevant to your website and post as often as you are able. A goal to shoot for is 3 times each week because you have to keep the momentum of the site going.

Don't forget to add a hyperlink to your website in your custom signature box at the forums, which will allow it to be automatically included at the end of your post every time you make a comment. It is important to note that you should never try to sell anything when you participate in forums, rather your main goal should be to build trustful relationships and, of course, backlinks to your site.

Page Rank Vs Alexa Rank - What Benefits Your Internet Business the Most?

In a world with just ten sites for the keyword "Hotel", there is no need to perform any ranking on any of the sites and return the results as such. But with millions of sites for a generic keyword like "Hotel", it is inevitable to come up with ranking algorithm to be fair to the good sites. There are several ranking schemes to rank a website, each having their criteria of ranking. So a web site developer should not be bamboozled by the numerous jargon and end up producing a messy site. Before developing a site, the developer must identify the precinct in which the site is going to fall and design the site according to that particular ranking scheme. So Alexa rank and page rank being the major ones, need to be analyzed to determine the way to go.

Alexa rank is a system where a site's rank is determined by the traffic received by a site by people with Alexa toolbar installed whereas page rank designed by Google is largely based on link building. A high amount of inbound links will increase the page rank although page rank is not solely based on links. It is influenced by other factors too like keywords. The exact number and kind of factors contributing to page rank still remain hazy. But it is largely based on links, keywords and tags.

A superficial glance would reveal that Alexa rank does not count the mass appeal of a website; rather it acts as a tool that ranks sites with more technical users. Alexa rank does not give the true rank a site deserves. This is because, it measures rank based on the traffic from users who have the Alexa toolbar installed. A normal web user may not install Alexa toolbar, or may not even know what it is. A site that is frequented by such users will be at disadvantage than a site that is frequented by webmaster and tech users, who know enough to install Alexa toolbar. So the former is ranked far lesser than the latter even if the number of users and credibility is higher.

Page rank is a comprehensive ranking algorithm that takes into account, not just that traffic it generates, but also the usability of the site. In other words, page rank takes the responsibility of increasing the traffic of a deserving website on its shoulder by listing it in the top search results. Page ranking is used as a gauge for professional link building services.

But this should not deter one from ignoring Alexa rank. Because Alexa rank, imperfect though it may be, is used by webmasters and commercial ad networks to determine the worth of a site and the Alexa rank fixes the price of advertisement on one's site.

If advertisement revenue holds the key to monetary gain from building the site then Alexa rank is the key factor that should be considered more important than page rank. But to all the others, page rank is still the best out there.

Surviving Google's Aging Delay

Google has always been the search industry's innovator and that's just what Google's aging delay symbolizes, the evolution of search innovation... yet another significant step forward for Google.

Google's success as a search engine can undeniably be attributed to its ability to consistently return the most relevant search engine results. That's what kept the search giant on top of the pack and leading the multi-billion dollar search industry & that's what's going to keep them there!

Now that said, is it any wonder why Google incorporated the infamous aging delay into their ranking criterion? The simple truth is, Google's aging delay is a full frontal assault on artificial link inflation.

With the induction of multiple clever off-page reciprocal-linking strategies engineered to artificially inflate link popularity and PageRank, Googles aging delay wasn't only necessary and long overdue; it was the next logical step in the evolution of search.

The confusion and misunderstanding of the aging delay among site owners is nothing short of amazing. Many of my clients are confounded because their new sites are well positioned in Yahoo, MSN & the other large search engines while they're site is no where to be found in Google's search engine result's pages (SERPs)... except for perhaps on the most obscure search terms.

Current and unconfirmed speculation has been misplacing the blame on Google's 'sandbox' effect. While this is a possibility I believe it's also highly improbable.

The sandbox holding period is typically anywhere between 90 to 120 days, the aging delay appears to be much longer. I've seen new sites delayed for up to 6-8 months.

The premise of the sandbox delay theory suggests that new sites are being penalized for gaining too many links too fast. To date I haven't seen a scrap of evidence to support that claim.

The sandbox theory is further disproved by the fact that newer sites engaged in procuring relevant links experience the same delay in climbing Google's SERPs as other new sites utilizing scores of purchased text links. This lends credibility to my thought that new sites are not being penalized on the premise of acquisition or quantity of inbound links and; supports my theory that it's the reciprocated links that are being delayed by an aging filter.

It just doesn't seem 'reasonable' for Google to penalize sites for acquiring legitimate directory listings & building an optimized reciprocal link based network. In my opinion, mainstream SEOs are confusing the existing sandbox effect, with Google's new 'aging filter' that arrived on the search scene earlier this year.

It seems more likely that Google's aging filter is weighing the 'maturity' of inbound links and not the new site itself. Meaning that in addition to the traditional ranking criterion, the age of a sites inbound links are also now considered.

My own theory is that newly acquired inbound links are placed on a 'probationary' status until they've 'matured' before they're considered. For example, a new and relevant inbound PR 6 link would not be given the same weight or consideration as a 'grandfathered' PR 6 link until the aging delay expired.

By placing newly acquired links on a probationary period and delaying the ranking of newer sites Google has effectively offset the instant free ride to the top of their SERPs. Purchasing volumes of brokered links to that end is now a moot point. After all, your site will still be delayed regardless of the amount of links you purchase and you won't see any return on investment (ROI) for at least 6 - 8 months.

Existing Site owners interested in immediate (ROI) are now strongly motivated to build new pages or expand existing sites in order to avoid Googles lengthy aging delay. With the 'all-the-rage' mini-network strategy shifting to more of a long-term commitment it seems likely that's exactly what will happen!

Whether by clever design or not, the only alternative to riding out the aging delay that produces immediate results in Googles SERPs is to advertise through Google's AdWords Program. So it seems that Google's solution vis-à-vis the aging delay has turned out to be an excellent vehicle to promote Googles own AdWords Program as well. Hmm...

How do you survive Google's aging delay? By taking pro-active action!

I haven't seen any new sites with new domains appear at the top of Google's (SERPs) since early to mid 2004. I've consulted with and tracked many of my clients' new sites and despite the fact they have hundreds of #1 positions in Yahoo, Alta Vista, AllTheWeb & MSN for their keywords I've yet to see any remarkable results in Google until the 6 - 8 month period.

The trend I've noticed suggests that new sites are initially indexed; ranked accordingly in Google's SERPs for a week or so and then literally vanish from the SERPs for several months. In most cases they can't even be found with the most obscure search terms... including their own name and address.

If you're launching a new site don't panic. Once you've registered your domain name and configured the hosting, you should set up a few temporary pages. Obtain links to them from other sites in Google's index to start the aging delay count down. I recommend launching a site immediately with enough content to set up and facilitate the requirements for directory listings to start. The sooner Google is aware of your domain the better. Just don't hold your breath waiting to see results... It could be as long as 6 - 8 months!

Gauge your optimization efforts by where your site ranks in the other search engines. Provided you're not engaged in unethical practices and followed Google's Webmaster's guidelines this should give you a ballpark indication of where Google will rank your site after the aging delay, just be patient.

To that end, don't keep tweaking and changing your pages source code and trying to manipulate your rankings until your site has been in Google's index for at least 6 - 8 months. In other words, there's no need to reinvent the wheel here because it doesn't seem to matter what you do, your site will still be delayed regardless.

Don't keep submitting your pages to Google either! It won't make any difference.

Check your server logs to confirm Googlebots' crawl and then forget about it. Googlebot will find your site again if you're actively reciprocating links so your time would be better served building an optimized reciprocal link network to get your site out there and linked to as early as possible.

If traffic from Google is crucial to your marketing and promotion plan, and I don't know anyone who would argue otherwise... budget to run an AdWords campaign for a few months until the site is indexed and positioned. You might even consider running an Overture campaign as well!

If you purchase non-directory links, reallocate that budget to Adwords advertising.

It's pointless to purchase links when you can invest in an AdWords or Overture campaign. Purchasing links is an investment you won't see a red cent ROI for at least 6 - 8 months while an Adwords campaign will drive targeted traffic to your site that can convert immediately. Keep in mind that Lycos, HotBot, AOL, Ask Jeeves, Iwon, Netscape & Teoma also receive paid results from Google! MSN, AllTheWeb, AltaVista & Yahoo receives paid results from Overture.

Do other search engines have an aging delay?

Google provides primary search results to other search engines. It only seems reasonable to expect that your site may be delayed in Google's partner sites as well.

One-way you may be able to work around this, and I can't emphasize this enough; is to make sure you submit your site to DMOZ, the open source directory. Google, in addition to the other major engines, receives directory results directly from DMOZ.

Yahoo and its partner sites don't seem to be utilizing an aging delay, nor does MSN, so focusing your early efforts on these search engines might give you a competitive edge in the Yahoo network.

At the end of the day when it's all said and done surviving Google's aging delay is just a matter of time. The days of purchasing instant link popularity and PageRank are over and in due course you will see Google give your site the recognition it deserves.

How to Increase Page Rank and Build Link Popularity

Every website needs to have a high page rank in search engine results and to achieve this result; a website not only needs to contain good and creative content, but also needs to build link popularity. In any search engine submission, one of the most important factors is your link popularity, which may be achieved through directory submission.

The latest concept in the field of directory submission for increasing page ranking is bid directory. To increase traffic to your website, you can employ bid directories, which enables you to bid for a high page ranking in search engine submission. The entire concept of bid link directories has brought a new trend throughout the SEO industry.

The method is quite useful and the popularity if the link increases tremendously. But one has to be really careful and thoughtful while using the method of web directory. The major difference between traditional web directories and bid directories lies in the fact that, the earlier had listing criteria that used to involve listing date, alphabetical order etc. However, the latter gives lesser priority to the above mentioned points. To get a high position in page ranking one has to bid and the highest bid is located at the top.

The home page of the web directory consists of the highest bidding web links and thus, the benefit to any business website listed on the same is obvious. The advantages of bidding for a place in a web directory are:

o The search engines regard such websites which have a link from any other website to your home page much more. It shows that your website has been chosen by many. Another important feature to remember is that if the page rank of that website which connects to your home page is higher, then your web page's significance will automatically increase. Link popularity plays a major role in search engine submission and optimization.

o A bid directory has the upper hand from the web directory as many users may just follow the link and come to your web site. Better visible links always have higher bids. The traditional method of linking the links on the other hand is normally almost hidden in various categories, and their visibility diminishes.

In today's world which is constantly evolving and becoming competitive with each passing day, it's really important to have the upper hand in the competitive market. By employing bid link directories along with keyword search and article directories, one can actually increase page ranks and build link popularity.

Increase Page Rank with Three Simple SEO Techniques

Increasing your site's ranking in the search engines can dramatically increase the traffic coming to your website. Having your site rank in the top three slots for several highly searched key words can mean huge revenue for you. How did the top ranking spots get there? Is this something you can pay for? The webmasters who have the top ranking sites have worked hard to get there. They have kept up with SEO techniques and edged out over the competition every time.

The most important aspect of your website is content. Without informative content users will quickly exit your site and not come back. Having tons of quality content on your site's pages is a great way to develop visitor loyalty. By having returning visitors you will also increase your conversion rate because many people do not buy on their first visit. Content will get your pages ranked higher than similar pages with less quality content.

Once you have some good content on your site you will need to get some incoming links. Email other webmasters and ask if they would be willing to trade links. The more links your have coming to you from related sites the higher your page rank will be. Steer clear of link exchanges and link farms. These are being overused and the links you receive are usually worthless because those same sites link to thousands of others. Some search engines even penalize you for using these programs.

If your budget allows, pay for inclusion to a high page rank directory. I have heard stories of people who have gone from a PR 0 to a PR 5 in as little as two months just from getting listed in a high ranking directory. These directories also have lots of visitors so having a listing would also be good for increasing traffic to your web site.

Remember that increasing your site's page rank cannot be done overnight. It is a work in progress that will take a few months of hard work to get ranked highly. However, it is very much worth the effort. Imagine having hundreds if not thousands of visitors reaching your website every day due to organic search results. It is possible!

Link Bait - Alive, Beguiling and Gratifying

What is link bait?

'Link bait' is the term invented by Nick Wilson in 2005 for techniques specifically designed to attract natural links to a webpage for search engine optimization (SEO). It includes a spectrum of possibilities including a complete article on a webpage, a list within an article, an image, a comment on a blog, a video, a quiz, a free program or an EBook. If you surf the net, you will have doubtless noticed the beguiling temptations that come your way clearly designed to encourage a link from you. Good bait has the potential to go viral as your masterpiece proliferates around the internet.

It has been argued that baiting strategies were in existence before it was given a name. Certainly, optimizers were aware that good quality content could attract links. In retrospect, the term was introduced at an opportune time. The importance of links was well known but optimisers were beginning to question the value of the once popular reciprocal linking and links that were not natural.

Link bait is unique and interesting content that other sites will naturally want to link to. The great bonus is that you do not have to ask or beg for the links but just set the bait and let it do its work.

Why is link bait important?

Off-page optimization (linking from other websites) has a greater influence on positioning on search engine results pages (SERPs) than the content of a webpage (on-page optimization). The search engines are judged by their ability to provide quality links for a search. Websites accumulating links from other websites voluntarily will be considered to have authority and their pages will move up the SERPs. Link baiting is an ethical means to lure those incoming links.

Why should webmasters or bloggers place a link to your website?

They do it for their benefit and not yours. The link will send their visitors and their link juice from their website to yours. The benefit for them is that if they have good outgoing links that are regularly updated, it will act as link bait for their website.

How to create effective link bait.

A great title that is keyword rich is the starting point for link bait. Deliver what you advertise in the title. There is a good chance that the title will be included in the anchor text within the acquired link adding to its benefit.

The five classic link baiting hooks are:

1. News - be the first to publish interesting news.

2. Controversy.

3. Attacks - this needs extreme care. There is a fine line between the acceptable and the unacceptable.

4. Resource -such as a video, complimentary EBook or quiz.

5. Humour - we all like a good laugh.

Link bait is not easy to produce and it takes considerable time and effort. You may spend more time producing a little link bait than on an entire article but the rewards are potentially greater. The bait must be recognized to be unique in your niche if it is to be effective so that it is challenging and great fun to produce. Content that informs, inspires, educates or entertains has the best chance of attracting those coveted links. It must have value for the targeted audience.

Link bait needs to hook readers instantly, and that means finding a format that grabs their attention. Formatting, such as the inclusion of technical terms, will depend on the targeted audience. Lists and guides are always good options because knowledge is highly sought after, but other factors such as humour, controversy or contradiction of widely held opinions will also help to give your content a vital edge.

Think about your niche and provide quality information in a succinct way. If you have a good article, consider creating a numbered list of bullet points at the top of the article. Numbered lists make great link bait. The title of the list may be picked up by the search engines, particularly if it can be included in the page title or Meta Description tag. Searchers are looking for a list of solutions to a problem. You can expand on the list in the subsequent text.

If you have expertise in your niche you may find a list of ways you assisted a client that could interest others. Success is likely if you can ignite emotion, whether it be astonishment or laughter. Get people fired up about something and the ball will start rolling.

A great deal of SEO is trial and error. What works in one situation may not be effective in another. It may have worked last year but not this year.

There is a difference between viral marketing and link bait. The objective of the former is exposure and branding whereas for link baiting it is links!

Link baiting has officially been with us for six years and will become more popular. The search engines are producing increasingly sophisticated means to find, eliminate and on occasion penalize unnatural links. Google's Panda update, introduced in 2011, is one example.

Some have argued that link bait is bad for the Web claiming that it lowers quality, increases web volume and makes it more difficult to find useful information and that it is getting near completion of its life-cycle. The author takes the view that great effort is essential so that it enhances the web and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Finally, creating great link bait that brings in those precious links is incredibly gratifying.

Increase Search Engine Ranking Through Page Rank

Organic search engine ranking should be a key component of your SEO (search engine optimization) efforts. There are a wide variety of techniques available for increasing rankings. These include submitting articles, creating blogs, and web 2.0 properties that include your key words and a link back to your site. But how do you know which sites will be advantageous to your SEO efforts.

What is Page Rank?

Page Rank, or PR, for short plays and important role when linking back to your site. PR is a number from 0 to 10. 10 being highest quality and 0 having no page rank value. Sites with 4 and above are normally considered high quality back links. While those with 6 and above are very sought after for creating backlinks (linking back to your site).

Finding the PR of a site can be some what involved. However, there are services that do provide this information. Normally lists are available that categorize sites by topic or type. For example, a list ordered by topic might include real estate or credit repair. A list ordered by type may include blogs, web 2.0 properties, or article directories.

As high page rank sites link back to your site, it will become more important to search engines. Assuming you have good content, you should with time see the PR of your site begin to increase. As your page rank increases, it will propel your site higher in search results for your keyword. Also, as your domain ages, it will help to increase your page rank.

Supplement PR With Common SEO Techniques

Of course, you should still use common SEO techniques as outlined above for articles, blogs and web 2.0 properties. Additionally, relevant keywords in the content of your site, your url (especially domain) will also help increase your site's page rank. In regards to keywords, it is important to focus on the same keywords for all of your backlinking and website content. Having backlinks and website content focused on the same keywords will help focus your SEO, which search engines like.

Just as good website content is important to getting better rankings, good content is also important when submitting articles, creating blogs and web 2.0 properties. Search engines will look at where your keywords are embedded in the content, and relevance of surrounding content. You don't want to have your only keywords next to a buy now button. Search engines will rank this type of density lower. Try not to take short cuts or play games with search engines and they will reward you.

Is HomePage PageRank Important In SEO?

High HomePage PageRank (HPR) does not ensure high positioning of webpages competing for a keyword but if a website does not have sufficient HPR for that keyword, it will have no chance of top page positioning on Google.

Keyword Difficulty and Keyword Difficulty Programs

Keyword difficulty is an indication of the strength of competing websites for a keyword.

There are a number of keyword difficulty programs. With one recent exception, the scoring systems have been unspecified with no means to identify the competitive strength of a website competing for a keyword. Before entering any competition, it is advisable to know your strength relative to that of your opponents.

As search engine optimisation (SEO) involves a competition for keywords, optimizers need means to identify keyword difficulty and a credible way to determine the competitive strength of a website that might wish to compete for that keyword. High quality SEO is the scientific application of search engine approved methods to increase targeted traffic to a website.

The Crucial Interim Step for SEO Success.

The majority of SEO and keyword related programs imply that any website can successfully compete for any chosen keyword and they suggest a two step process:

  • Choose your keywords
  • Optimise your webpages for all those keywords.

The author takes the view that there is a crucial interim step that has not been previously discussed in the literature. That interim step is the identification of those keywords that a website has even a chance of top page positioning on a search engine results page (SERP) and in particular the top Google SERP.

SEO involves time, effort and usually financial expense. If no attempt is made to focus SEO efforts on keywords that are within range for a website most of these efforts will be wasted chasing rainbows. There is no value in competing for keywords that are well out of range for a website having any chance of reaching the top SERP.

HomePage PageRank Keyword Difficulty (HPR-KD)

There is compelling, verifiable and published evidence that the top factor in the Google algorithm is HomePage PageRank. The second factor (G-Factor 2) is the boost to the effective HPR given to HomePages that are competing for a keyword. This boost increases the effective competitive strength of HomePages with HPR0-4 up to 5. There is no discernible increase for HomePages with HPR5 or above.

HPR-KD for a keyword is calculated by averaging the HPRs, including the G-Factor 2 adjustment, of the webpages on the top Google SERP. Guidelines are available indicating the minimum HPR required to have any chance of top page positioning on Google for a keyword depending on the HPR-KD. HomePages competing for a keyword have a better chance of succeeding than internal webpages because of the G-Factor 2. The guidelines, therefore, include two columns for minimum required HPR - one for HomePages and one for internal webpages. Internal pages on a newly indexed website will not reach the top Google SERP for any useful keywords as their associated HPR is 0.

The vast majority of small to medium sized business websites have HPRs of 3 or less which significantly limits those keywords in range for top positioning on Google. Those with HPR 2 or less may be able to compete for keywords with low HPR-KD with their HomePages, because of the second Google factor.

Whereas, we know that a newly indexed website has an HPR close to 0.0, we cannot at first sight look at more mature and successful websites with the same degree of accuracy.

An HPR of 4 requires about 2,500 average value links from other websites whereas an HPR5 requires 75,000 such links. We will see both as PR4 as we are not privileged to the decimal information known to Google. There is a large difference in the competitive strength of a website with an HPR of 4.01, as known to Google, and another with HPR 4.99.

Enormous insight is provided on a website's authority, as Google sees it, when there is a change in HPR following a PageRank update. One of my websites recently moved from HPR3 to HPR4 and another dropped from HPR4 to HPR3. Neither suddenly changed positioning in Google's SERPS for the keywords being monitored. The changes in HPR of both websites show that they have HPRs in the region 3.9-4.0 and this allows new avenues for future research.

HPR-KD in SEO Practice

When choosing keywords for the theme of a webpage, care must be taken to determine if the website has what it takes to achieve top page positioning on search engines. This will depend on:

· Whether it is the HomePage or an internal page.

· The HPR of the website.

· The HPR-KD of the keyword for the relevant Google domain (Google.com; Google.co.uk etc).

Targeting keywords that are in range allows a website to be found and potentially acquire natural links. In addition, if the website has high quality content that is well presented, Google Panda will pick this up by favorable user signals and could well gradually elevate the webpages up the SERPs. Whilst it may seem tempting to target keywords that have higher search volumes, if they are out of range for the website, top positioning will not be achieved and the website's authority development will be unnecessarily slow.

It is unlikely that a small or medium sized business website will ever acquire HPR5 or higher, Websites with HPR5 or more are in the privileged position to be able to compete successfully for relatively high keyword difficulty keywords. Good luck to them.

David Viniker MD FRCOG is a doctor trained to practice evidence based medicine. He has applied the principles of evidence based practice to SEO. David believes that HomePage PageRank (HPR) is the top factor in the Google positioning algorithm and that Google provides a boosting adjustment to the HPR of HomePages that are competing for a keyword (G-Factor 2). He has developed a new, essential keyword tool - http://www.KeywordSEOPro.com which calculates keyword difficulty for a long list of keywords based on average HomePage PageRank (HPR-KD) of the URLs on the top Google search engine results page (SERP) for each keyword, including the G-Factor 2 boost. Guidelines have been produced indicating the minimum HPR required for a website to have a chance to achieve top page positioning for both HomePages and internal webpages depending on the HPR-KD of the keywords. 5 Ways To Increase The Page Rank Of Your Website

Search engines are the main method people use to find the websites that they are looking for, Google being the most popular. Google uses a complicated system for calculating the individual page rank of each site, and not all if it has been confirmed. Despite this, however, we are still aware of some of the methods that can be used to boost your page rank.

1. Link Building

Link building is the technique used by the majority of high-ranking pages. It refers to both putting links to other sites on to your pages, and getting other people to put links to your site on their pages. Google considers each link as a kind of 'vote' towards the sites PR. Therefore, the more incoming links you have, the higher your page rank is.

You can build links in a number of ways, and the most immediate way is to link each of your pages to each other. You can also link to other pages that relate to your page, and a link to Google actually gives you good karma points in their eyes. Note that if you are linking to bad websites, it can actually lead to your site being flagged, and being removed from the PR.

2. Posting Quality Content

When people go to a website, they generally leave immediately if there is nothing of quality on it. This has a very negative effect, and can lead to people removing links to your site from their pages. This decreases your page rank dramatically. To avoid this, always make sure your content is useful and high quality.

3. Using Commonly Searched Keywords

Since Google matches a user's search term as exactly as they can, throwing in a few of the more commonly searched terms can work wonders on your page rank. This is known as search engine optimization, or SEO, and is used in a lot of successful websites to get more views, therefore getting more incoming links, and finally getting higher up in the listings.

4. Advertise and Popularize Your Site

In order to get a lot of incoming links built up, you need to have people see your site. Submitting it to web directories, advertising through social media or advertising programs such as Google Adsense are all very good, legitimate ways of advertising your site. There are also a lot of others ways that can be thought of with the right resources.

5. Don't Use Any Unethical Tactics

This simply means that you should always stick to legitimate techniques for improving your page rank. Never turn towards anything dodgy, despite how high it says it may get you in the page rankings. Always remain legitimate, no matter what.

With these simple steps, you can make it all the way up the page rankings so you have a popular and quality site that can be earning you revenue even when you aren't there. Improving your page rank is the perfect way to maximize your earnings, with little effort required.

Google Page Rank Explained

Page Rank (PR) is an algorithm used by Google to compute the relative importance of a particular webpage on the internet and assign it a numeric value from 0 (least important) to 10 (most important). This value is calculated through an iterative analysis of the backlinks to the webpage. If webpage A links to webpage B then webpage B would receive 1 "vote" towards their page rank.

Fact: Page Rank is calculated on a webpage by webpage basis not on a website by website basis

The importance of the webpage casting a vote and the total number of outgoing links on the webpage casting a vote are the primary factors which determine how much "voting share " this webpage will transfer to each of the outgoing links on them. Google calculates a webpage's page rank by adding up all of the "voting shares " for that webpage through an iterative calculation.

Page Rank is one of the factors Google utilizes to help determine their Search Engine Ranking Positions (SERP's). It should be noted that this algorithm is only one part of their overall ranking scheme and not necessarily the most important one as many website's would have you believe. The general internet user has no idea about the concept of page rank and are unable to tell what a particular page's PR is unless they have the Google Toolbar installed (or use an online page rank checker). Since page rank is part of Google's search ranking algorithm an understanding of the concept is still important for any webmaster concerned with getting traffic to their site.

Fact: Not all links pointing to a webpage are counted as votes for that webpage

As soon as Google introduced the concept of page rank unsavory webmasters developed ways to manipulate the rankings. These webmasters began creating web pages with the sole purpose of increasing the amount of incoming links pointing to their website.

Common Black Hat SEO Techniques:

  • Link Farms - pages containing long lists of unrelated links set up for the sole purpose of manipulating search engine rankings and page rank
  • Doorway Pages - orphaned webpages either on the same website or distributed throughout the internet stuffed with keywords containing links to the offender's site. Used to artificially inflate the back link count for a website.
  • Free For All Links Pages - a type of link farm where, as the name implies, anyone is free to post their link. Once a valuable way to spread the word about your website, abuse through auto submissions has rendered these sites worthless and are now viewed as search engine SPAM.
  • Automated or Hosted Link Exchanges - sites that offer to provide "hundreds" of back links to your site instantly. Generally you will have to install some html code on your website to display their directory and in return anyone else who has this code installed on their website will be displaying your link. This is a case where "if it sounds too good to be true it is". The search engine's are wise to this technique and watch for unnatural "spikes" in the number of backlinks pointing to a website. In actuality it is possible to inflate your page rank with this technique but if the search engine's wise up to your practices (and they always do eventually) you risk being dropped from their index or black holed in their rankings.

How is Page Rank Calculated?

When Google introduced the concept of page rank they published the algorithm they were going to use to calculate it. The formula in it's current form is known only to the engineers at Google but it is fair to say it closely resembles the following formula.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

While at first glance this equation can seem daunting, in actuality the concept is not that hard to understand. Let's take a minute to break down the formula and see what conclusions can be drawn.

PR(t1)...PR(tn) - the page rank (PR) of each page from page t1 to tn. (each value of t represents 1 link to webpage A)

C(t1)...C(tn) - the number of outgoing links (C) on each page from page t1 to tn

d - damping factor

Quoting from the original Google Page Rank white paper:

The parameter d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1. We usually set d to 0.85.

Knowing what these parameters mean and knowing the value of the damping factor we can simplify the formula from above:

PR(A) = 0.15 + 0.85*(A "share" of the PR of every webpage linking to page A)

The "share" each webpage passes to webpage A can be computed by dividing the Page Rank of the webpage linking to page A by the number of outgoing links on that page. Each outgoing link on that page would receive an equal voting share from the total available page rank of the page containing the outgoing link. The total available page rank each webpage has available to transfer to outgoing links is a little less than the total page rank of that page (PR of page * 0.85) which can be easily derived when the damping factor is known.Implications

Having a basic understanding of the algorithm we can now draw a few conclusions about page rank and it's implications to your website. For instance, it is very possible to have a link on web page X that has a high page rank transferring less page rank voting shares to your website than a link on web page Y with a lower page rank.

How is this possible?
Let's analyze an example:

Page X - page rank 4, outgoing links 10

Page Y - page rank 8, outgoing links 100

Page X would transfer 0.85(4/10) = 0.34 page rank voting shares to each outgoing link

Page Y would transfer 0.85(8/100) = 0.068 page rank voting shares to each outgoing link

Even though Page X has a much lower page rank value, due to the fact that the number of outgoing links on Page X is so much smaller than on Page Y it actually transfers more page rank voting shares to each outgoing link than Page Y .

Pages with no links back to them would still have a modest page rank value of 0.15 derived from the (1-d) portion of the equation. It is important to note that while this value holds true according to the equation, only Google engineers are privy to the knowledge of whether actual page rank voting share is transferred in this scenario. Google could easily say that pages with no incoming links transfer a page rank voting share of 0 with a click of a mouse and no one would know for sure except them.

Fact: The Google Toolbar displays Page Rank as a base 10 log scale that is not the "actual" result of the Page Rank calculation

The average page rank of all pages in the index is 1. It is possible to have an "actual" page rank value in the millions or much smaller than 1 using the page rank formula but the Google toolbar only displays integers from 0 - 10 on it's pr meter. Only Google knows how the scale is split up and where the basepoints for each level are. For example, it may take an actual page rank of 10,000 using the formula above to achieve a page rank of 4/10 on the toolbar scale.

Page Rank in Complex Networks

The example above does not actually duplicate a real world example since it is only computing the page rank "voting share" of the ffa page in an idealized situation where the page rank of the page is already known. In complex networks with links in and links out of webpages the actual page rank for a webpage cannot be known due to the interdependencies each web page has on one another to calculate their page rank.

Think of it as a "chicken and the egg" situation. The problem can be solved by taking a best initial guess for the page rank value of each webpage in the network and plugging it into the page rank formula. The results of these calculations are then used to calculate the next incremental page rank values for the webpages in the network. This calculation is repeated over and over again until the page rank value approaches a limit. This limit is then the actual page rank for that page. In a complex network like the internet finding the page rank for all webpages can take millions of iterations.

Click here [http://www.iprcom.com/papers/pagerank] for more detailed examples and an online page rank calculator

It is also worth noting that when a webpage transfers page rank voting shares to another webpage the page rank of the contributing page is not reduced in any way. There is no actual page rank transfer, only a weighted "vote" is passed to the outgoing links.

Links on webpages with a high page rank and little or no other outgoing links on them but yours will provide the best opportunities to improve your page rank (if that is your goal and it shouldn't be, link for traffic not pr). Make sure to work on your site content and design before approaching other webmasters for links. The bottom line is you need to have a site worth linking to in order to get people to link to it.
