You've probably heard the old saying don't put all of your eggs in one basket before. This proverb is as true in marketing online as it is in anything else today, and today I'm going to talk about traffic diversity.

It's always a good idea when you're promoting your website to vary your traffic sources. By traffic sources, I mean the different places online which you use to receive visitors to your website. You may certainly find that some sources of traffic pay out better for you than others, but you should always have at least a few different areas which you regularly receive recurring traffic from.

In addition to just enabling you to get more traffic, you should vary your traffic sources because you never know how stable any of them really are. For example, if your main source of traffic comes from search engine optimization off-site, a few simple changes in major search engine algorithms can have a profound and massively damaging effect on your site's placement in the SERPs. As soon as you lose that cushy search engine spot, all the traffic which you grew accustomed to goes with it and all of a sudden the traffic which you may rely on for providing your own income or salary has dried up completely.

Another popular source of traffic, pay per click advertising, can similarly be affected by any kind of change from the company who controls the guidelines for that pay per click system. Google is constantly making changes to their AdWords system and you may find that your strategy doesn't comply with their new terms of service overnight. Alternatively with paid advertising, your advertising budget could disappear if you are having cutbacks on your end of your website, so you need to have organic sources of traffic in place, as well.

There are literally hundreds of completely legitimate and traffic flowing sources of traffic out there if you know how to look. On the paid side, Facebook is a great place to start advertising because unlike Google it's much easier to directly target your demographic of choice because people are freely offering their personal information as well as their likes and interests so that you can target them accordingly.
