Are SEO and SEM Related?

There have been no standardized terms on the worldwide web, no definite vocabulary to follow and words are being coined on a daily basis, words that are sometimes a combination of two three terms put together for easy recall and utilization. For example, a webmaster may mean someone who leads a group of people some of whom are search engine optimizers, marketers, designers, technical support specialists, article writers, and website developers or the same word may also pertain to an individual who performs all the tasks of the people I just mentioned, hence there is no clear line between the two.

Much is true with the term SEO and people have been using it based on the context of the three words used - search, engine, and optimization and when combined may mean a process or a groups of strategies the ultimate aim of which is to get a specific website noticed by the search engines in the hope that they place the link of the site on top of the results page. To many, SEO is tantamount or one in the same with SEM or search engine marketing and it would really be very hard to discern between the two.

For a few, SEM or search engine marketing involves a much broader view of all the endeavors and efforts exerted to expose and promote a business and increase the size of traffic that it gets in order to increase revenue and SEO is a division of SEM. This can be true since there are other online tactics that are not covered by the realm of search engine optimization.

Search engines allow paid advertising obviously for profit and an advertiser can immediately have their ads placed on the results pages rather than wait until it is found and recognized by the spiders, assessed, and if it passes the algorithmic requirements of the search engines but not until then. This option of instantaneous placement is costly, yet it eliminates months of strategizing and tactical online management and it is ideal for sites that are always being updated since these sites are the priorities of the search engine spiders whenever they perform web site evaluation.

If you have no issues with budget and you want your site to rank without delay, then SEM is the right choice for you because it increases visibility thereby boosting your chances for conversion. The only setback in implementing SEM as your choice for your online campaign management is that its popularity is short-lived, hence you have to infuse fresh funds every now and then and keep your website updated so that clients will have something to look forward to and not the same content over and over again.
