Five Easy Things You Can Do To Improve Your Website's Search Rankings

Many business owners feel overwhelmed when it comes to the large number of ever-changing tactics you can deploy to improve your rankings for key phrases on Google and Bing search results pages. However, there are some easy tactics you can first try, especially if your target phrases are only moderately competitive.

First, you can make sure you have target keywords on each page of your website in the title tag and headers. The title tag is the line of text you see at the top left of your browser window. The search engines view this tag with much importance. The headers (or H1, H2 headers) are the headlines separating the body copy on your page. Because they are section headings, the search algorithms expect them to define the content for the page, and thus, place a high importance value on them.

Second, you may want to consider adding in a meta description tag in your code for each web page. The meta description is the two lines after the title tag that search engine results pages show for your site. Make sure you have some of your key phrases within your meta description and try to make the sentence or two eye-catching so you stand out from the rest of the search engine results entries.

Third, cross link between the pages on your site. For example, your homepage should have links to your products and services phrases. If you sell customer relationship management (CRM) software, you should have a keyphrase-rich link containing "CRM software" on your homepage linking over to the CRM product page.

Fourth, create an easy way to consistently add new content to your site. Search engines like fresh content. One way companies do this is by daily or weekly posts to a blog. Another is adding an articles or resources section to your corporate website.

Finally, make sure you appear to be a credible company online. You can check to see if you have profiles on the major local and business directories at GetListed.org. While directory listing on Business.com and the Yahoo! Business Directory can run $300 per year, they are well worth it in the increases you will see in search rankings once you claim the listings. There are also many free business listings such as Yelp! and Manta which help in establishing your credibility with the search engines. In addition, they can send business to your directly. Our agency's free Manta.com listing recently results in a $12,000 deal. That's not bad for a free directory listing we initially just setup for a back link.
