A WordPress blog with no plug-ins is similar to a car with no wheels - you get nowhere! I was amazed at once I had added these plug-ins, how much traffic was generated, SPAM ceased and the general appearance of the site improved.
Akismet
Checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. This has saved me many hours of deleting spam comments, some of my pages have had over 3000 spam comments stopped, so this one is a must.
All in One SEO Pack
Automatically optimizes your WordPress blog for Search Engines (Search Engine Optimization). I did not know about this plug-in at first but I soon learnt how important this plug-in is.

A nice simple contact form plug-in. Simple but flexible. I tried a few contact forms but this is just so simple and easy to use.

It generates html files that are served directly by Apache without processing comparatively heavy PHP scripts. By using this plug-in you will speed up your WordPress blog significantly. I did get this description from there site as I do not know the tech side of this as it is over my head.
Fast Secure Contact Form
A super customizable contact form that lets your visitors send you email. Blocks all automated spammers. Packed with settings and features. If you are looking for a contact form that has more features than contact form 7 this will be it, I do like simple but maybe when I am a bit more advanced I will check it out.

This plug-in will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines to better index your blog. All I can say is you need to have this plugin.
NextGEN Gallery
NextGEN Gallery is a full integrated Image Gallery plug-in for WordPress with dozens of options and features. If your site is in need of a gallery for your pictures this is it, I do not need it yet but it does come highly recommended. It also produces a slide show gallery.
