How To Decide Which Keywords To Use On Your Website

Deciding what keywords you should fight to rank for is probably one of the most difficult, if not the hardest, parts of search engine optimization. It is not at all difficult to rank number one for some keywords in Google. If you happen to have a website, you are probably ranking number one for many phrases. The only problem is those are probably the phrases that nobody is searching for, or you do not want to rank for in the first place.

To come up with the right answer, you will probably start with some keyword research tool and read everything you can find online that even remotely involves the word 'SEO'.

Still, you could make a somewhat different approach and ask yourself first - what is the point of your website and what do you want your visitors to do once they get there. There are many different types of websites out there and figuring out where yours belongs will greatly help you when deciding what keywords to choose.

For this purpose, it will suffice to divide all websites that exist into three categories: hubs, authority sites and niche websites.

Websites considered as hubs are top authorities and they are main resources in a particular industry. It contains almost anything that you could possibly need to know and more on a certain topic. People use hub websites as their ultimate resource, where they will find out what steps to take next. One typical gaming hub website is gamespot dot com. It provides loads of useful information and resources on everything gaming-related.

Authority websites are on a lower level than hubs and they are the places to go when you are looking for some particular, quality and highly targeted information. As a rule of a thumb, authority websites have loads of content that is highly relevant to the chosen topic.

Example of a gaming authority website would be MMORPG, the site that has a somewhat narrower specialization in that it provides all kinds of information regarding MMO games, yet the amount and quality of the information provided is invaluable.

Niche websites are the third and most frequent category where vast majority of sites belong. Niche websites are even more specific than authority sites. They are providing information on much narrowed down subjects. A typical example would be almostgaming dot com website. It is a niche website, which is providing a lot of information, but focused on one specific game only.

Knowing what category your future website will belong to will save you from optimizing for wrong or too broad keyword. Try to define your website accurately with as few words as possible. If you had no adverbs or adjectives, you are running a hub site. If you used one or two to define it, it is an authority website. If it has more than two, than it is a niche website. Select your keywords accordingly.
