First off what is SEO? SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is the process of getting search engine traffic to your website using organic search results. The higher your site is ranked in the search results, the more free traffic the search engines will send you.
o In order to get high quality leads to your website or blog, you must have the right keyword phrases, also called long tail keywords. You want to optimize your site for these words to draw your target market in. You don't want to optimize for the search engines only.
o Make sure you design your website around your keywords. Do not make the mistake of building a beautiful website and then trying to decide what keyword phrases you should use. Once you have your keyword phrases, then you are ready to start writing copy for your site. Make sure to use your keyword phrases often throughout your copy.
o Only purchase a new domain when you have to. The longer a domain name has been around, the more the search engines are going to like you. By changing your domain name it could take weeks and often a couple of months to build your traffic back up from the organic search results. This obviously does not apply to new websites.
o Remember that search engine spiders can't read drop down menus or interpret graphics. You still want to use these, but make sure they are able to find all your pages on your site.
o Use your top keyword phrase in your title tag. What you put in as the title tag is the link between your site and the search engines. Be sure that that your title tag is relevant to the content on that page.
o It is very important for search engine optimization that other sites back link to your site. The search engines like to see that your site is popular. Just as importantly, you have to be careful of who is linking to your site. If it is a spammer it then could hurt your search engine ranking.
By following these couple of points, you should be well on your way to driving an increase in high quality leads to your site. I would tend to measure how I am doing by watching the increased sales, traffic and conversions and spend less time looking for what your ranking is for certain keywords. All of these steps taken together will go a long way in helping you with your search engine optimization and search engine ranking.
