How Can I Get A Higher Rank On The Search Engine Result Pages?

Getting a higher rank in the search engine result pages is indispensable for every business across the globe. The task seems much complicated seeing the immense competition, but execution can be made simpler by working on the basics. Let us first understand how the search engines work in order to determine what one needs to do to synchronize the website in line to the search engine rules. Understanding the search engine algorithm will give us an idea behind how the search engine ranks a particular website.

Search Engines in layman's terms are like puzzle solvers! Some of the most genius minds on this planet have tried to work out algorithms to analyze the query put froth by users and provide the best suited answer the query. Therefore the search terms that we enter into the search engine are basically questions which the search engine finds answers to. It is fascinating to learn how this extremely complex software has made our lives so simple in the world today. Every search engine maintains a huge database of web pages with the help of an automated software called search bots or crawlers. These crawlers scan websites on the internet and send the information retrieved to the search engine data center where in layman's terms the website is saved! Whenever a particular user enters a search phrase (also called a key phrase), for example web development company India, the search engine processes that query with its database of pages and finds the most relevant page containing those key phrases.

Doesn't it look a little too simple?

Tip to Note: Google has 5 data centers across the world and is said to have indexed more than 8 billion pages! Yet it delivers the results to any user query within a fraction of a second.

Let us consider the search engine perspective as well and give them some commendation! The search engines not only have to find the answers to the queries, but also have to find out the most relevant ones from the huge list of similar looking pages. Therefore the automated software not only have to analyze the webpages but also have to rank them in a way so as to place the best find on top of others. The task looks simple there is an extremely complex algorithm that works behind to rank web pages.

Often one would have noticed that any organic search engine optimization process takes from 12 - 16 weeks to show results. Now this is the base time that any search engine has kept for itself to analyze and scan the website as per its guidelines. You may be wondering that does it take that long to scan the website?? The answer is no! But search engines analyze a website continuously over this period to determine its position on the SERP's (search engine result pages). A search engine like Google can take up to 6 months to give your website a page rank, and about 4 months to decide your website's position on the search engine result pages.

Let us focus on Google users:

There may be some users who would say that: we have got a page rank within a month of uploading a brand new website! Or we have got no page rank but have got a first page position on the SERP's!

The occurrence of such cases is rare but in past many have experienced such instances. This was called a "Google sandbox effect"! This generally occurs to a relatively new domain and is a Google exercise to determine whether or not one has used any negative technique for optimization (black hat techniques). Also some users wish to achieve immediate success after the launch of their website. In such impatience, they try to get in as many back links, content etc for their website to get a jump start. However they forget that Google would analyze them over a period of 12 - 16 weeks minimum and then give them a permanent rank! (of course those already existing as leaders deserve some fair ranking!!) Therefore Google puts these websites under a scanner (scrutiny) in order to make sure that no illegal methods of getting a higher ranks are used. This scrutiny region is called a sandbox. Now one would ask why have I got an immediate rank? For this one has to understand that this is not a permanent rank, but is basically an illusion one has created for the search engine algorithm which is bound to give you a rank for the work done by you. However, the algorithm is designed in a way that if it is forced to give you a rank so soon, it would put you under a scanner! (It is like saying that if you earn a lot of money very fast, the income tax department has got an eye for you!) The details of the sand box effect would be discussed in later articles, however what is important to note is that one must not try to get a rank overnight!

Coming back to the key question- how can I get a higher rank on the search engines?

The first step of course is the set froth directions for the search engine algorithm. If the directions are there, then the search engines would have no problems in co-relating your webpage to the search query entered by any user on the globe. Let us have a look at some of these directions:

1. Keywords in Meta Tags, Title Tags, Anchor text, Alt Texts: These are some of the areas where any webmaster can set directions for the search engines to follow. Here one can put in some keywords he/she wants to get the website optimized for. But do remember not to over exaggerate on the keywords or you are bound to be penalized.

2. Keyword Rich Content in the text: Writing a content based on the inverted triangle rule is very important if you have to optimize your website for these search engines. The search engine crawlers scan websites from top to bottom and from left to right, therefore one has to design the content in such a way so as to make an inverted triangle of the keywords in the text.

3. Well structured website: Internal linking of the website is indispensable for complete indexing of the website. It is like setting up road paths for the smooth indexing by the crawler.

4. Say no to spam: Spamming of text, links etc can kill your rankings, so beware of not to copy.

5. arrange for links from external websites, web-directories, social bookmarking websites etc. These links should have keyword rich anchor texts in them and should be form credible websites (i.e. non spammed websites). However do not try to get in all the links at once. Best is a slow & continuous approach which leaves search engine software under no suspicion.

Search Engine Optimization is a very useful method to gain popularity or increase business, however it is essential to take in some expert help to avoid any kind of penalization to your virtual office online by the search engines.
